As we moved into level three of the national lockdown earlier this month, the ban on alcohol was lifted. This was met with much excitement. Adding to the news, was the rumour of a new gin on the block.
As far as rumours go, this one rang true. Six Dogs Distillery’s 2020 Harvest Pinotage Stained Gin hit the shelves. And trust me, with its distinct rich pinotage colouring, it will have you rushing to get a bottle.
I was one of the lucky few to be gifted a bottle. And let no grass grow under my feet to mix up my first level three GnT. I was pleasantly surprised by the taste, as I could taste the deep pinotage like berry and tannins mixed with well-known juniper flavours. Let’s just say it tasted like more.
Charles Bryant, founder and distiller of Six Dogs Distillery, explains the process: “We took delivery of these carefully grown, pruned and hand-picked grapes and placed the first batches into waiting tanks of gin. The whole berry Pinotage grapes were then left to infuse our gin with their deep red colour and Pinotage flavour profile.”
Previously produced as a seasonal Gin, Six Dogs Pinotage Stained now sits firmly beside its predecessors, Six Dogs Karoo and Six Dogs Blue, as an all-year-round offering. It may be the new gin on the block, but will definitely be a firm favourite in my cabinet for seasons to come.
